PRF vs PRP: What’s the Difference?

medical provider holds a vial of blood for spinning in centrifuge for prf or prp

You’ve probably heard of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) already thanks to its association with the famous “vampire” facials. But what about this PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) that people are talking about? A lot of people assume the only difference is in the name (think “direct message” vs “private message,” which both refer to the same thing). In reality, the difference between fibrin and plasma is more like the difference between tears and saliva—similar components, different end products.

Keep reading to find out more from the area’s PRP and PRF experts, the Radiant Divine team. Led by one of the top 1% of injectors in the country, we have the expertise and knowledge to help you meet your aesthetic and wellness goals.

Whichever of our convenient Cleveland-area medical spas you choose, we guarantee you get the same great experience. Already want to get started? Request an appointment!

Fibrin vs plasma

Platelet-rich fibrin and platelet-rich plasma are both harvested from your own blood, then spun in a centrifuge to separate the individual parts of the blood. This creates end products rich in platelets, stem cells, growth factors, and fibrin.

To achieve PRP, we spin the centrifuge and faster speeds that create a total separation of platelets and fibrin. For PRF, we use a slower speed for the centrifuge to allow for a denser, more gel-like consistency.

The differences between PRP and PRF

With PRP, we use an anticoagulant to keep the plasma from thickening. This keeps it thin enough to spread effectively for topical use during a vampire facial, and makes it the perfect consistency for injection to treat sexual dysfunction. Growth factors release fast and furious from PRP, giving you that boost you’re looking for.

With PRF, no anticoagulant is used, creating a thicker consistency that’s perfect for injecting more like a filler. You’ll get immediate, subtle plumping action that continues to improve, thanks to the slow and steady release of growth factors from the PRF.

Ultimately, we’ll sit down together and discuss your options and whether PRP, PRF, or both could be right for you.
